How to change the default program used to open a file type in Windows 7

If you’ve ever installed a program and suddenly found certain file types opening with it instead of what you had before, it can be confusing and annoying. Today we take a look at how you can control which applications are opening certain file types on your computer.

set-associations-windowsWindows will usually open a specific file type in the same program, known as the default program, all the time. Windows 7 support only opens one program for a particular file extension. suppose if you like your JPEG files to open with Photoshop Elements, for example, and not Paint, then changing that default program for JPEG files is what you need to do.

This can easily be rectified though. Here's following steps will help  to change default program and help to open in windows 7 support environment.

Step1: From the Start menu select the Control Panel.

Step2: Open the Program section and then click on Make a file type always open in a specific program from the section labeled Default Programs.

Step3: Windows will now display a list of all the various file extensions and the default program currently used to open it. To change the default program, simply click on the extension your require. For example .doc. Now press Change Program in the top right-hand corner of the window.

Step4: You'll now be offered a list of programs installed on the PC that can open this file type. Select the one you want and press OK. The default program will now be changed.

Step5: Alternatively, you can right-click on any file with this extension and select Open with from the drop down menu. Press Choose default program from the menu and you'll be presented with the compatible programs installed on the machine. Select the one you want and then make sure the box next to Always use the selected program to open this type of file is checked. Press OK.

If you don’t like original button in your system and want to change this button and set a new look then follow this blog.  How to customize Windows Start button in Windows 7.

How to customize Windows Start button in Windows 7

There are many different ways and means of customizing the Windows 7 desktop, both using tools built into the OS itself, and third-party applications to change more setting. But they all seem to make one assumption: that the default location for the Start menu’s button -- the left or top of the Taskbar depending on its position -- is the right one.
If you are bored of look at the same old Windows 7 Start Orb, you can now change it easily. Start Orb Mover comes from the folk at The Windows Club, and is still very much in its early stages of development, despite the 1.0 version number. There are many things to like about it -- small download (1MB) and portability, so there’s no installation or messing about with system files involved.

If you don’t like original button, then you can follow the given steps to set your start button.
  •  Right-click on the "Start" button in an open area on the Windows 7 home screen and   click "Properties." The Task bar and Start Menu Properties dialog box appears on the screen.
  • Click the "Customize" button in the upper-right corner of the dialog box. The Customize Start Menu dialog box appears on the screen.
  •  Type the number of programs you want to display into the field to the right of "Number of Recent Programs to Display" at the bottom of the dialog box. Then click OK two times to save your changes and exit the dialog box.
If the Start Button does not get changed, you may have to follow these steps:
  •     Make sure that the program is closed.
  •     Manually take ownership of “C:\Windows\explorer.exe” – or you can use our UWT to do so easily.Run the program and select the orb.

How to make Windows Search more useful in Windows 7

In Windows 7, you can find more things and facilities in more places within few times —documents, email messages, songs etc.

Perform Your Search From the Start Menu
In windows Explorer, search any files from search bar, it rarely find anything, because Windows Explorer only searches the folder you're in—not your entire computer. If you have Libraries open in Explorer, it'll only search your libraries. If you aren't confirm where the file is that you're looking for, open up the start menu and search from there. It'll search your entire computer for files, folders, and programs matching those terms. If you want more detailed results, you can then click "See More Results" to bring up a detailed search results window. But thinking that you can shortcut your way to the detailed results by opening up Explorer first will get you nowhere.

Search the Contents of Your Files
index contentsBy default, Windows does search the contents of your files, meaning if your search term shows up inside a document (but not in the file name), it'll show up in search results. However, for some reason, this only works some of the time. I've certain files come up for one search term and not another even though both terms appeared somewhere in the document. I found the best way to improve content searching is to open up Windows Explorer and head to Organize > Folder and Search Options, then go to the Search tab. From there, check the "Always search file names and contents" radio button.
Suppose,if you have too many files in your system but some are corrupted or you are not able to delete this file,i think this article will help to delete your corrupted files and organize into better way.How to Delete Undeletable Files in Windows 7

Choose Which File Extensions Can Be Searched By Content
originalNow you can search by contents of your files, may be few of them still aren’t searchable- most notably file types Windows doesn't think you want to search, like .conf or .sh files. To search, go to the Start Menu and search for "Indexing Options". Choose the top result that comes up and then click the Advanced button. Under the File Types tab, you can add a new extension to the list, or edit any extension on the list to index the contents of the file. You can also uncheck any file extension to stop search from indexing that file type.

Add Folders to Your Index
If you have moved any folders in your Users folder, or are storing something useful elsewhere on your drive, you can add that folder to the index in one of two ways. Note that the more folders you add, the slower Windows search becomes, so don't just add your entire C: drive—pick your folders carefully to keep it fast and useful.
The easiest way is to include it in one of your libraries. Windows Explorer automatically indexes all your libraries, so either creates a new one or right-click on an applicable library and goes to Properties to add a folder to it. That folder will then be added to your index.
Alternatively, you can go back to Indexing Options (by searching for it in the Start Menu) and clicking the Modify button to add a new folder to the index. This is useful if you want to index a folder but don't want it to appear in any of your Windows 7 libraries.

Manually Type In Your Search Filters
If you want to search within a specific folder, you might find that searching from Windows Explorer's search box offers you a number of search modifiers to refine your terms, like "Date Modified", "Kind", "Type", and more.

search filterWhat you may not realize is that these filters change depending on what folder you're in. Usually it's helpful, changing them to Artist/Album/Title in the Music folder, or "Date Taken" and "Tags" in the pictures folder. If you ever want a filter that isn't shown, however, you can always just type it in yourself (e.g. datemodified:last week invoice1). In fact, it isn't unlike searching Google in this way—you can also use AND and OR operators too, plus quotes if you're looking for a specific phrase. You can also change what type of file a certain folder is optimized for, which will change the search filters available to you in that folder

Hidden features in the Windows 7 Default Programs tool

While exploring in Microsoft Windows 7 recently, I discovered something hidden features which is by default programs in windows 7 support. Default Programs was like Windows XP’s Set Program Access and Defaults tool, which was added at the SP1 stage and was designed to alleviate charges of Microsoft’s anticompetitive business practices by allowing Windows users to easily specify the third-party browser, email, messaging, and media programs as the defaults.

However, when I actually ran the Default Programs tool found in Windows 7, I discovered that while it does serve that same primary function, it also contains several other additional configuration features.
Launching Default Program
You’ll find the Default Programs tool near or at the top of the All Programs section of the Start menu. You can access it quickly by clicking the Start button and typing Default in the Start Search box. When you launch the Default Programs tool, as shown in Figure A, you’ll see a list of four options that allow you to configure how Windows 7 works with programs:
  • Your Default programs
  • File Type Associations
  • AutoPlay Settings
  • Computer Default Programs
default page
Figure A
Default programs
When you select the Set Your Default Programs option, you’ll see a window that lists all the programs that Windows 7 considers the defaults and possible defaults for the browser, email, messaging, and media programs. When you select a third-party program such as Google Chrome, which competes with Internet Explorer, you’ll be given the option to set the program as the default, as shown in Figure B.

set default program
Figure B

Keep in mind that the options you set in this part of the Default Programs tool apply only to your user account — they won’t affect any other user accounts on the computer.
File type associations

Changing file type associations in previous versions of Windows has never been a very straightforward procedure. However, changing file type associations in Windows 7 using the Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Specific Program window, as shown in Figure C, is a real piece of cake.
set association
Figure C

All you have to do is select a file extension and click the Change Program button. Then, when the Open With dialog box appears, as shown in Figure D, just select the program you want to associate.

AutoPlay settings

When you insert a CD, DVD, USB Flash drive, or other removable media, AutoPlay kicks into action and immediately prompts you to use the application associated with the files on the media. When you choose Change AutoPlay Settings, you’ll see the window shown in Figure E and will be able to configure the program that you want AutoPlay to launch when you insert the device or media. You can even completely disable AutoPlay if you desire.
Figure E
Program access and computer defaults
When you select Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, you’ll see the Set Program Access and Computer Defaults window, as shown in Figure F. As you can see, this user interface and its configuration options are identical to the Windows XP’s Set Program Access and Defaults tool. And, like the Windows XP version, this one sets the defaults for everyone who uses the computer.
